- Some writers write a many-page Introduction. I wrote none until
- my agent forced me into one. Here's the entire Introduction:
-
- We believe an astounding number of things.
- One of the most astounding things we believe is that
- everything we believe is true.
- When something is accepted as common knowledge, we rarely
- think of checking it.
- "Of course the world's largest pyramid is in Egypt.
- Everybody knows that."
- The world's largest pyramid isn't in Egypt, though.
- We all take pride in what we know, and in increasing our
- stock of knowledge.
- We also like to be surprised, and take a certain perverse
- pleasure in learning that a commonly believed "fact" is
- false.
